The mission of the First Light Bookstore, as part of the Maunakea Visitor Information Station, is to support visitors to the Mauna in developing an awareness of the cultural, environmental and scientific significance of Maunakea.
Inspired by Hawaiian wayfinding and the night sky, the ʻIwakeliʻi Long Sleeve Shirt features a striking constellation design that comes to life after dark. ʻIwakeliʻi, known as Cassiopeia, is depicted as a celestial bird guiding a traditional voyaging canoe across the ocean beneath a star-filled sky.
Printed on a soft, comfortable long-sleeve shirt, the stars are made with glow-in-the-dark ink, allowing the constellation to shine when the lights go out. This design honors the deep connection between navigation, storytelling, and the stars that guided Polynesian voyagers across the Pacific.
