The mission of the First Light Bookstore, as part of the Maunakea Visitor Information Station, is to support visitors to the Mauna in developing an awareness of the cultural, environmental and scientific significance of Maunakea.

These plants live 3 to 90 years, flowering only once, sending up a stock with hundreds of pink and red petals. The plant die soon afterward, scattering its seed to the wind. "Ahinahina survives, best in high elevation, moist, gravel services that can be protected from ungulates.
